Berkeley alumni celebrate relaunch of Taipei club

In celebration of 20 years of successful association in Taipei, the Alumni Association of UC Berkeley in Taiwan will be formally relaunched as the Berkeley Club of Taipei on Thursday, April 12, at the Grand Formosa Regent Hotel. World-renown Taiwanese architect Mr. Kris Yao (class of ‘78), will keynote the evening gathering of Berkeley alumni, including such distinguished figures as Nobel Laureate Professor Y. T. Lee (‘65), First International Computer Chairman and CEO Dr. Ming-Jeh Chien (‘71, ‘75) and President Mrs. Charlene Chien(‘72, ‘73), Formosa International Hotels President Mr. Steven Pan (‘86), Former Ambassador to Costa Rica Dr. K.W. Mao (‘64) and many other guests. Yao will reflect on his personal journey as a Berkeley alumnus and unveil the new Berkeley club logo he designed.

Alumni sponsors include Mr. Tommy Chao (‘94), President of Polaris Securities Inc., and Ms. Olivia Wu (‘02), Special Assistant to the Chairman, Shin Kong Financial Co. The event will be held at the Formosa Regent Hotel, Taipei, on April 12, 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m., and is hosted by the Berkeley Club of Taipei and UC Berkeley, Office of International Relations. The event is open to Berkeley alumni, parents and friends.

The Berkeley clubs worldwide represent a network of global citizens with strong ties to Berkeley who are committed to furthering the Berkeley mission of social good and academic excellence. The Berkeley Club of Taipei’s activities in the future will include distinguished speakers series and social networking events to serve as a platform for intellectual engagement and public forums.

“As Berkeley alumni, we can’t help but be different,” reflects Kris Yao, “We feel our Berkeley perspective will add an interesting dimension to the US university alumni presence in Taipei, and continue as an active part of the global Berkeley network.”

Moderated by current club president and EVP Asia of Parsons Brickenhoff International Mr. Frank Chen (class of ‘83), the event will feature keynote speaker Mr. Kris Yao, as well as Ms. Julia Hsiao, UC Berkeley Assistant Vice Chancellor of International Relations.
