The first National Car Free Day for the whole area of Taiwan will take place on Saturday, May 5. On Sept. 22 last year, the 2006 International Car Free Day, a total of 1,500 cities in 40 nations imposed a temporary ban on motor vehicles to help reduce air pollution and save energy. Ma Ying-jeou, then Taipei mayor, and Taipei County Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei instituted traffic control in some districts of the Greater Taipei to encouraged residents to participate in car-less activities by using bicycles or mass transportation.
