1st Saturday of May is National Car Free Day

The government plans to designate the first Saturday of every May as the National Car Free Day beginning this year, according to Chairman Yang Ying-ming of the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters Association (TBEA).

Yang revealed at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Taipei International Cycle Show at the Taipei World Trade Center that Premier Su Tseng-chang made the decision.

The first National Car Free Day for the whole area of Taiwan will take place on Saturday, May 5.

On Sept. 22 last year, the 2006 International Car Free Day, a total of 1,500 cities in 40 nations imposed a temporary ban on motor vehicles to help reduce air pollution and save energy.

Ma Ying-jeou, then Taipei mayor, and Taipei County Magistrate Chou Hsi-wei instituted traffic control in some districts of the Greater Taipei to encouraged residents to participate in car-less activities by using bicycles or mass transportation.

They led residents on a bike ride beginning at the Civic Plaza of Taipei City Government and concluding at the No. 4 Park in Zhonghe City, Taipei County.
