Premier Su Tseng-chang and his predecessor Frank Hsieh yesterday said they would accept mediation by

President Chen Shui-bian over their rivalry for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's presidential nomination.

Su, who announced his presidential bid earlier this week, said he hopes Chen can mediate between the contenders after the registration for the primary closes.

Asked if he would be willing play second fiddle in the DPP presidential ticket, Su said he would accept the outcome of the mediation as long as it was "perfect."

Hsieh said he would accept the result of a mediation. But if there is no mediation, the party will then have to proceed to a primary as stipulated by the party rules.

Hsieh, who had previously said he could serve as a running mate in next year's race, remarked that President Chen is likely to be the mediator.

Su and Hsieh are two of three DPP heavyweights who have announced their presidential bids. The third is DPP Chairman Yu Shyi-kun.

Vice President Annette Lu is another possible contender, but she has yet to announce her bid.

It has been widely reported that Chen might negotiate between Hsieh and Su to have them form a DPP presidential ticket.

The DPP will accept registration for its presidential primary from March 5-9.

The United Evening News reported that Yu is eager to become the first hopeful to register for the DPP primary.
