Two passengers killed after VIP driver runs into overpass

The driver of a Mercedes-Benz S600 sedan hit a pedestrian overpass in Tachih, Taipei yesterday morning, suffering minor injuries and killing two passengers inside the vehicle.

Twenty-one-year-old Huang Chun-chie said he was driving in Tachih when he lost control of the NT$9 million car and hit the overpass on the right side of the road.

The car immediately went up in flames and Huang tried to save his two friends inside the vehicle — Tsai I-ta and Su I-chih, both 23 — but failed. Huang suffered minor injuries to his arm.

Police arriving at the scene found the car sitting diagonally across the road with its rear end and roof completely smashed.

Police said the impact of the crash caused the car’s fuel tank to bend out of shape and leak gasoline, which caused the fire.

The car’s dealer Daimler Chrysler sent a representative to the accident scene and has reported the findings to the company’s headquarters in Germany.

Daimler Chrysler said that the representative was sent to provide a service to the owner of the car, a VIP customer.

Police investigating the accident said that Huang was not aware of the speed at which he was driving when the accident happened and that he was not drinking. Huang will undergo tests for drug usage.
