Volume of Chinese New Year SMS calls increase

The number of mobile messages sent via major telecommunications networks in Taiwan recorded a year-on-year increase of more than 20 percent for the three days leading up to and including the first day of the lunar New Year as sending mobile New Year greetings has become increasingly popular.

A total of 19 million, 22.52 million and 24.98 million messages were sent via the Chunghwa Telecom mobile network two days before, the day before, and the first day of Chinese New Year, respectively, company officials said.

The average number of mobile messages sent during these three days rose 49.5 percent compared with the same period last year, and the income generated from the messaging service for these three days amounted to approximately NT$90 million, the officials said.

Taiwan Mobile Co. saw 31.18 million and 38.33 million mobile messages transmitted or received via its network on Chinese New Year’s eve and Chinese New Year’s day, respectively, officials said.

The figures represent a rise of 20 percent and 24 percent, respectively, over the same time last year, they said.

Meanwhile, officials at Far Eastone Telecommunications Co. said the volume of 2G messages sent via its network during the first hour of Chinese New Year jumped 30 percent over last year, while the volume of 3G imaging messages sent during the same period climbed 70 percent.
