Port city lures tourists with pineapple cakes

Taiwan’s port city of Kaohsiung is using a sweet bait to lure foreign tourists — pineapple cakes.

Since January, Kaohsiung has launched the three-month Warm Winter Promotion Project. When a Japanese or South Korean tourist checks into a hotel, he or she receives a ticket for a free boat ride on the Love River and a box of Taiwan’s famous pineapple cakes, Broadcasting Corp of China (BCC) said on Monday.

The box contains a dozen pineapple cakes, one of the most delicious cakes made in Taiwan. About the size of half a phone card, the pineapple cake has a crispy outside and the inside is sweet golden-colored pineapple jam.

Kaohsiung has already given away 12,000 boxes of pineapple cakes, BCC said.

The Kaohsiung City Government is promoting itself as a city with a warm winter — little rain and plenty of sunshine. So it is a good place for Japanese and South Korea tourists to escape from their cold winter.

Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan, is Taiwan’s second-largest city after capital Taipei, and the Kaohsiung Harbor is the world’s 6th-largest container port.

Kaohsiung’s previous tourism promotion measures include giving each foreign tourist a box of Taiwan fruits.
