es, with Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin officially inaugurating the projects. The tearing down of Taipei City's Chungshan Bridge and Aiguo W. Road Pedestrian Bridge was officially started with Hau presiding over the works' opening ceremonies, in which he handed out red envelopes and thanked the workers for sacrificing their holiday time.
The start date of the projects was chosen because of the minimal flow of traffic during this period, as many have left the city to go south to hometowns or elsewhere for the Chinese New Year holiday.
After tearing down the bridges, the traffic will improve considerably, said the mayor.
Tearing down bridges during the Chinese New Year holiday has already become a tradition of the Taipei City government, and it symbolically represents the removal of the old to make way for the new and to let city residents have a better tomorrow, said Hau.
Both bridges have 26 years of history. Once the tearing down of the Chungshan Bridge is completed in March, Chungshan N. Road will no longer be a bottleneck. The removal of the Aiguo W. Road pedestrian bridge will not only make traffic flow smoother, but also improve the view, said bureau director Ni Shih-piao.
