KMT expels Wang, wife, suspends brother

The Kuomintang expelled Wang You-theng, founder of the Rebar Group, and his wife Wang Chin Shih-ying from the party yesterday.

Mrs. Wang is board chairman of the group, whose affiliate Chinese Bank went under last Friday. Its depositors withdrew more than NT$45 billion in a three-day bank run.

Both Wang and his wife are out of country. They are staying in Shanghai, but neither has been charged with any wrong-doing.

They left for Hong Kong en route to Shanghai on December 30, one day after two affiliates of the group, China Rebar and Chia Hsin Food and Synthetic Fiber, filed insolvency protection requests with the Taipei district court.

The filing was reported to the Financial Supervisory Commission six days later, and the commission’s decision to delist the two companies touched off the bank run.

Wang’s younger brother, Shih-chan, had his Kuomintang party rights suspended.

He heads the Union Insurance Company, another affiliate of the Rebar group.

The suspension of party rights automatically suspended Wang Shih-chan’s Kuomintang central standing committee membership.
