Toddlers, seniors face many hazards at home

Slippery hard floors are the most hazardous areas for toddlers at home and a lack of emergency chords in bathrooms is the greatest hazard for senior citizens, said Taipei City’s Department of Health (DOH) yesterday.

According to a study of residential safety hazards conducted by the DOH, other top factors that jeopardize the safety of toddlers at home include the absence of smoke detectors and no emergency phones nor safety covers on electric fans, as well as automatic metal gates with no object detectors.

For senior citizens, besides sharing the same home safety hazards as toddlers, the lack of safe hand holds is also a source of potential accidents at home.

The study was conducted last year by trained inspectors from 12 health centers in the city, who primarily examined homes with toddlers and senior citizens, according to the United Evening News.

A total of 198 factors were evaluated in different parts of homes, including hallways, front doors, balconies, and stairs.

Chen Mei-ju, DOH’s health management bureau chief, said that most accidents involving toddlers and senior citizens occur at home and are in large part due to the lack of a safe living environment.
