Wu Den-yih named KMT secretary-general

Lawmaker Wu Den-yih was named secretary-general of the opposition Kuomintang yesterday.

He was told of his new job by Ma Ying-jeou, Kuomintang chairman, early in the morning to the surprise of Chan Chun-po who he is to replace.

Chan had not been given notice.

The nomination, however, will be formalized at a regular Kuomintang central committee meeting next Wednesday.

Wu’s appointment began a revamp of the Kuomintang central office in preparation for Ma’s presidential bid in 2008.

In particular, Ma hopes Wu will help him control the often unruly Kuomintang lawmakers.

Born at Nantou in 1948, Wu graduated from Taiwan University in 1970. He worked as a reporter before starting his political career as a Taipei city councilor in 1973.

Eight years later, in 1981, Wu was elected magistrate of Nantou county. He served two terms and was appointed chairman of the Kuomintang Taipei chapter in 1989.

Appointed mayor of Kaohsiung in 1990, Wu served in that capacity until 1998. He was elected to the Legislative Yuan in 2001.
