Man stabs his girlfriend to death, fails in suicide bid

A man tried to kill himself five hours after watching over the body of his girlfriend whom he allegedly had killed in Taipei Friday, police said yesterday.

Lin Chi-kai, 25, was rushed to the hospital after the suicide attempt, and was recovering, police said.

Lin told police that he met his girlfriend, Su Ya-ling, 28, more than a year ago, but recently she wanted to leave him.

He confessed that he had a quarrel with Su at her apartment on Friday afternoon at about 4:30, and in a fit of rage he took out a knife and stabbed the victim 10 times until she stopped struggling, according to police.

He said he did not want to see her face and covered it with a pillow and a blanket, and then watched over the body for five hours before trying to kill himself.

He said he tried to hang himself but the leather belt he tied around a beam could not support his weight and snapped. He then slit his wrist in the bathroom, where he was later found lying on the floor by a friend of Su’s, police said.

The friend told police he had tried to contact Su earlier that day, but as nobody answered the phone, he went to the victim’s apartment.

Police said it was premeditated murder because Lin had bought a knife earlier that day before going to Su’s apartment.
