Taipei Smart Card Company, which has sold five million Easy Cards, wants to double its customers "in the not too distant future," according to its chairman Ou Chin-teh.
"We reached our five million-card target in only two and a half years," Ou told a press conference at his company headquarters yesterday.
The press meeting was held to mark the sale of the five millionth Easy Card on February 7.
That card was sold at the Metro Guandu station at 1304.33.
"In the not too distant future, we'll sell our ten millionth card," Ou said with confidence.
Mayor Ma Ying-jeou of Taipei said at the celebration at least everybody in the greater Taipei area should have an Easy Card, with which the holder can board a Metro train as well as a city bus.
It can be accepted for paying parking fees at a selected number of car parks.
The greater Taipei area has more than six million residents.
"Not just that," Ma said, "we hope to expand the coverage of the Easy Card."
More car parks will be asked to accept the Easy Card.
One new use of the Easy Card may be to pay for taxi fare. Another under contemplation is to substitute it as petty cash, with which holders may make purchases at convenience stores.
"In the end, we wish the Easy Card will be accepted not just as a train-bus ticket in Taipei but as a petty-cash card throughout Taiwan," Ma said.
