MIB: Reports on spy arrests are inaccurate

Ministry of National Defense’s Military Intelligence Bureau (MIB) yesterday said a China Times report that President Chen Shui-bian had caused the arrest of some thirty mainland-based Taiwan businessmen who were spying for Taiwan was inaccurate.

The report said that over thirty mainland-based Taiwan businessmen were arrested by mainland China following Chen’s announcement in 2003 on the locations and numbers of missiles aimed at Taiwan along the mainland China coast.

Months before the 2004 presidential elections, Chen said that over four hundred cruise missiles were aimed at Taiwan, citing intelligence.

In the one hundred days following the announcement, mainland China rounded up over thirty Taiwan businesspeople, including a former MIB officer.

The officer received a suspension on his death sentence and most of the other Taiwan businesspeople were sentenced to over ten years in prison, according to the report.

The report added that two of the thirty Taiwan businesspeople have been released by mainland China and sent back to Taiwan.

MIB said yesterday that mainland China’s missiles against Taiwan are widely known and can be proven by satellite photos and that the report that Chen’s announcement in 2003 led to the arrest of the Taiwan businesspeople was inaccurate.
