Taiwan July electricity usage down 6% on tariffs

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan electricity consumption fell 6 percent in July from a year earlier as the government raised tariffs and promoted energy conservation.

More than 1.4 million households qualified for a 20 percent discount on their electricity tariffs by meeting a government target to cut usage by 10 percent or more from a year earlier, the Government Information Office said in a statement yesterday. A reduction in usage in July by 2 million households, for a saving of 480 million kilowatt hours, cut carbon-dioxide output by 756,000 metric tons, the statement said.

Taiwan Power Co., the government-owned electricity provider, announced June 17 it will raise prices 12.6 percent from July, in line with President Ma Ying-jeou’s policy to end price caps and let tariffs reflect costs.
