Large biotechnology show to open in Taipei in late July

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- One of the largest biotechnology exhibitions in the Asia Pacific region, 2008 Bio Taiwan, is slated to be held at the Taipei World Trade Center July 24-27 with the aim of providing a platform for biotech companies from home and abroad to show off their latest products and achievements, organizers said yesterday.

The event, organized by Taiwan Bio Industry Organization, will bring together exhibitors from overseas and from Taiwan’s government, industry and academic sectors to show case a wide range of pharmaceutical, biomedical devices and instruments, biotech food, biotech cosmetics, agricultural and fishery products, and other biotech and health products.

The Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs will host a Taiwan Biotech Industry theme hall to highlight the development of the country’s stem cell research and its potential impact on people’s lives.

The hall will be divided into five pavilions — a biotech pavilion to promote the government’s policy and achievements in the field, a medical pavilion to present the results of Taiwan’s human stem cell research, a local biotech industry pavilion, an overseas biotech industry booth and a leisure life exhibition area.

The government pavilion will present the achievements of Taiwan’s biotech industry, the government’s policy on promoting industry investment and the development and formulation of regulations to upgrade the industry.

The stem cell research booth will feature the development of biomedical technology and education and explore the history and future of stem cell research.

The organizers of the event plan to hand out some 5,000 pamphlets on the still developing history of the study of stem cells — the so-called “magic seeds” of regenerative medicine that offer hope for a cure for various chronic diseases and recovery from organ failure.

The domestic biotech pavilion will focus on biopharmaceuticals, biotech services, and biotech life sciences.

The overseas industry booth will gather some 40 biotech firms from the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Canada or their representatives offices in Taiwan to present their achievements and to attend several forums on the sidelines of the fair.
