(245 items), Hewlett-Packard Co. Taiwan (209 items), and Epson Taiwan (163 items), all of whom are recognized as industry leaders producing eco-friendly products such as air conditioners, refrigerators, printers, laptops, and toner cartridges. “Those products with our ‘green mark’ are low-pollution, energy-saving, and recyclable,” Yang Ching-hsi, a division chief of the EPA, said in a press conference yesterday. The EPA has promoted the “green mark” certification system since 1993 with the aim of helping customers to choose products with the least impact on the environment. The top three product categories with “green mark” designations are electronics, household appliances, and water-efficient products, accounting for 65 percent of the total certified products, according to EPA statistics. Meanwhile, in order to encourage the public to purchase environmentally friendly products, the EPA also established an online system last year for local businesses to register as “green stores.” To qualify as a “green store,” businesses must sell at least three “green mark” products, provide recycling services, and use energy-saving facilities, Yang said. As of June 22, a total of 265 chain stores owned by 55 businesses had registered online, with 164 of them approved by the EPA as “green stores,” including General Welfare Service Ministry, B&Q Taiwan, Carrefour, Far Eastern Geant, and Surewell Wholesale.
