Local business leaders to attend APEC meeting in San Francisco

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese delegation led by local business leader Cher Wang (王雪紅), chairwoman of HTC Corp., is scheduled to attend an APEC meeting in the U.S. later this month, a local official has announced.

The delegation will also be joined by Tsai Hong-tu (蔡宏圖), chairman of Cathay Financial Holding Co. (國泰金控) and Matthew Miao (苗豐強), chairman of MiTac-Synnex Group (神通電腦), announced Michael Hsu (徐佩勇), director-general of MOFA's Department of International Organizations, at a regular briefing on Tuesday.

The group will be representing Taiwan at the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting to be held Feb. 24-28 in San Francisco.

The delegation will exchange views with their counterparts around the region on issues regarding enhancing regional economic cooperation, promoting basic infrastructure and sustainable development, as well as boosting small and medium-sized enterprise cooperation, as well as women's issues, among other topics.

ABAC was created by APEC economic leaders in November 1995 to offer advice from the private sector on policy priorities and areas of cooperation.

Up to three members from each economy are appointed to the body representing a variety of industries.

Taiwan became a member of APEC, a forum for Pacific Rim countries established in 1989 that seeks to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region, in 1991.

It is one of the few important international organizations that Taiwan is officially a member of under the name Chinese Taipei.
