Local social media users connect via mobile devices: poll

TAIPEI--Nearly 90 percent of people in Taiwan who visit social networking sites use their mobile devices to do so, with younger users spending more time on such sites, a survey indicated Tuesday.

The poll, conducted by the state-funded Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute (MIC, 資策會產業情報研究所), showed that 87.6 percent of Taiwan's social media users usually connect on their mobile devices.

In terms of the time spent on social networking sites, the survey found that nearly 70 percent of users in Taiwan spend up to two hours per day on such sites, with younger users accounting for the highest percentage of those in the upper limits of that time slot.

People under the age of 19 make up 29.8 percent of the group that use mobile devices for social networking between one and two hours a day, the survey showed.

Among those who spend between 31 minutes and an hour per day accessing social media sites on their mobile devices, 25.8 percent are people in the 30-39 age group, according to the poll.

In the 16-30 minute time bracket, people over the age of 40 make up 21.9 percent, the poll showed.

The survey was based on 2,187 valid samples collected earlier this year via questionnaire. It had a confidence level of 95 percent and a margin of error of 2.11 percentage points.

Another poll released Aug. 19 by Taiwan Network Information Center found that 9.88 million Taiwanese, or 47.27 percent of residents over 12 years of age, used mobile Internet between November 2013 and April 2014.
