HTC reverses fortunes, scores 3 wins in local market over July

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- HTC Corp. (宏達電) topped its home market in July in terms of sales units, revenues and single models, an encouraging sign in a quarter that the smartphone maker forecast would be a weak one.

According to statistics released Monday by industry sources, HTC took up a 22 percent share of the 712,000 smartphones sold in Taiwan last month, well above Asustek Computer Inc.'s (華碩電腦) 15 percent and Samsung Electronics Co.'s 14 percent.

Sony Mobile came in fourth with a 9 percent share of total smartphone volume, followed by Xiaomi Corp. (小米公司) of China in fifth with 6 percent and InFocus Corp. of the United States in sixth with 5 percent.

In seventh to 10th place were Taiwan Mobile Co. (台灣大哥大), Nokia, LG Electronics Inc. and Apple Inc., the statistics showed.

HTC topped smartphone sales revenues as well during the month with a 25 percent share, beating Samsung's 18 percent, Sony's 14 percent, Asustek's 12 percent and Apple's 5 percent, according to the statistics.

In terms of bestselling single models, the mid-tier HTC Desire 816 topped the list with a 7 percent market share, while HTC's flagship One M8 and Asustek's low-cost ZenFone 5 each took a 5 percent share.

Rounding out the top five bestsellers were the Xiaomi Redmi Note with 3 percent and the InFocus M210 with 2 percent, the statistics revealed.

Despite outperforming sales expectations in Taiwan, HTC still faces uncertainties in the global market due to rising competition not only in the high-end model segment but also in the lower-cost tier, according to market analysts.

The Taoyuan-based manufacturer posted consolidated sales of NT$10.6 billion (US$353 million) in July, down 51.6 percent from a month earlier and also down 32.58 percent from a year earlier.

HTC also forecast its sales in the July-September quarter to drop by 27-35 percent sequentially, attributing the decline to an early delivery of products to distributors in the second quarter and a product transition period in the third quarter.
