Far Eastern Air launches Taichung-Meixian flights

TAIPEI -- Far Eastern Air Transport (遠航) launched a regular non-stop route yesterday between the central Taiwan city of Taichung and Meixian in southeastern China.

The flights will operate every Monday, using an MD-82/83 aircraft that seats 165 passengers, the carrier said. Starting Sept. 22, the airline will offer another new route, between Taichung and Hefei in East China, operating every Monday as well. Far Eastern Air plans to put two new Boeing 738 jets into service in 2015 to boost its transport capacity.

The airline said it is focusing on the travel market in Taichung amid increasing exchanges between central Taiwan and cities in China.

In the first six months of the year, Taichung Airport handled 1.05 million travelers, compared with 806,000 in the same period last year, according to government statistics.
