TAIPEI--Worldwide shipments of smartphones will continue to grow in the third quarter of 2014, spurred by the release of the new iPhone model and China-made handsets later this year, a local market information advisory firm said Monday.
A total of 322 million smartphones are expected to be shipped in the July-September period, up 13 percent from the previous quarter, TrendForce said in a research note.
Shipment growth in the last quarter of the year, however, will be flat, it said.
TrendForce forecast that global smartphone shipments for the whole year will rise by an annual 29.2 percent to 1.2 billion.
"A larger iPhone screen will bring a new wave of demand in China," which is now the major driver of the global smartphone market, the advisory firm said.
The new iPhone is expected to be unveiled Sept. 9, according to TrendForce.
Despite the expected strong demand for the new iPhone globally, the key lies in whether the supply chain makers can sustain a stable production yield and the assemblers can maintain capacity, said TrendForce analyst Avril Wu.
