Star Cellular rolls out 31-day free 4G trial

Taiwan Star Cellular (台灣之星) yesterday rolled out a 31-day 4G free trial program, allowing users to test the company's 4G service before it is formally launched at the end of next month.

With yesterday's announcement, Taiwan Star Cellular became the fourth telecommunication company in Taiwan to provide 4G service.

There is no cap limit on data usage during the free trial, and a new registration is all that is required to try the service, the longest 4G trial program in Taiwan.

Taiwan Star Cellular's 4G service is available in all counties of Taiwan except the Matsu Islands. In addition to the wireless broadband service, the mobile company also provides 10-minute free calling for new registrants.

New users will receive a text message three days prior to the end of the free trail. Their SIM card will be nullified automatically. To further win customers' hearts, the text message can be exchanged for an iced black tea at local restaurant Mos Burger.

Taiwan Star Cellular opened 135 new stores yesterday. A promotional event was held at its new flagship Taipei 101 store. HTC 610 smartphones, which sell for NT$7990 in the market, were sold at the price of NT$101 to the first 50 people that lined up at the Taipei 101 store. Although registration began at 1:30 p.m., some had come to line up in the early morning.

Taiwan Star Cellular is providing 4G service in 21 major counties and cities, covering 209 administrative districts, 156 central business districts, 160 tourist attractions and 40 night markets.

The mobile company says 4G signal can be detected on 70 percent of the nation's highways. The company's 4G signal has an 80-percent service coverage in Taiwan and aims to reach above 95 percent by year-end.

The company is also beefing up its 3G infrastructure and forecast that the company's base stations will grow by an additional 30 percent. The combined 3G and 4G coverage will make surfing online more seamless, Taiwan Star Cellular said.
