Taiwan companies attend Philippines food exhibition

Taiwanese food and beverage businesses have headed to the 2014 World Food Expo (WOFEX 2014) in the Philippines, with strong confidence in their products' quality and advantages of lower costs.

The WOFEX is held at the World Trade Center and SMX Convention Center in Pasay City in the Philippines from Aug. 6 until Aug. 9. The four-day food show has attracted up to 200 manufacturers from various countries, including Taiwan, the U.S., South Korea, Malaysia as well as the Philippines.

The food and beverage market in the Philippines is worth cultivating since the population of 100 million is a large market in the global context.

To expand Philippines markets, more than 10 Taiwanese food companies have attended the WOFEX, such as the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), the Jaw Feng Machinery Co. (兆酆), and the Dase-Sing Group (沛鑫).

According to a leader of the Food Processing Machinery Committee of TAMI, surnamed Gou, Taiwanese companies' competitive advantages is that their food machinery is as good as that of manufacturers in Europe, the U.S. and Japan.

Furthermore, prices for Taiwanese machinery are relatively low compared with rivals. The close geographical distance between Taiwan and the Philippines makes it easier to move the merchandise there.

A large number of Filipinos have taken part in the food show. Gou added that profits from this year are hard to predict since Taiwan's firms were absent at last year's WOFEX, due to the 2013 maritime shooting incident between the Philippines and Taiwan. Nevertheless, the forthcoming weekend is expected to attract more attendees to the show, bringing in stellar profits.
