Acer back in 4th spot on Asia-Pacific's PC market

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Acer Inc. (宏碁股份) replaced local rival Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩電腦) as the fourth-largest personal computer vendor in the Asia-Pacific region in the second quarter of 2014, according to research firm IDC.

A total of 24.3 million PCs were shipped in the region in the April-June period, up 2 percent from the first quarter but down 10 percent from a year ago, according to IDC data. The total was marginally higher than IDC had forecast.

Acer saw its market share rise from 7 percent in the first quarter to 7.6 percent in the second quarter to replace Asustek in the fourth spot thanks to attractive entry-level products that spurred growth in key markets, IDC said in a report on July 21.

Asustek's market share dropped from 7.6 percent to 6.7 percent.

Lenovo Group Ltd. (聯想集團) retained the top spot with a 26.6-percent market share on high sequential growth in China and India. The Chinese vendor was followed by Dell Inc. in second with a 10.5-percent share and Hewlett-Packard Co. in third with a 10.4-percent share.

"The ongoing economic slowness in the emerging markets (set) the tone of overall PC demand and inhibited the region's year-on-year growth," said Handoko Andi, a research manager with IDC's Asia-Pacific Client Devices Group.
