TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Wall Street Journal report yesterday stated that Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 handset will see unprecedented shipping volumes to reach between 70 million and 80 million units before the end of this year, vastly exceeding the company's earlier handsets.
According to the report, Apple is ramping up shipping volume in anticipation of tremendous expected sales in the vast China market, as China Mobile (中國移動), the world's largest telecoms carrier, will distribute the company's iPhone handsets for the first time. The report also suggested that Apple has ordered enough spare parts to service 120 million units of iPhone 6 handsets.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (鴻海) and Pegatron Co. (和碩), two of Apple's main suppliers and manufacturing partners have staged a hiring spree to fulfill labor requirements at their China-based facilities. According to sources close to the companies, Hon Hai and Pegatron will begin manufacturing the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 variant in August, with mass production to commence in September, and Hon Hai will be the exclusive producer of the handset's 5.5-inch variant.
Financial institutions stated that Apple and its partners will face considerable technical challenges in producing the iPhone 6 at acceptable yield rates due to the handset's utilization of larger in-cell touch screens.
