OLCA established to facilitate Taiwan's OLED lighting firms

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Eyeing the US$5.6 billion indoor lighting business, the Organic Light-emitting Diode Lighting Commercialization Alliance (OLCA) was recently established with a view to facilitating OLED industry development in Taiwan.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (IRTI,工業技術研究院), which initiated the setting up of OLCA, yesterday expressed its confidence over OLED technology. ITRI projected that the market scale of OLED lighting will reach US$5.6 billion in 2020, 23.4 percent of the total solid-state lighting market.

ITRI is a nonprofit research and development organization engaging in applied research and technical services originating in Taiwan. Numerous well-known, high-tech companies in Taiwan, such as leaders of the semiconductor industry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (台積電) and United Microelectronics Co.(聯華電子), can trace their origins to ITRI.

ITRI revealed that major OLED companies including RiTdisplay Corp. (錸寶科技), WiseChip Semiconductor Inc (智晶光電), Merck, Corning Incorporated and Tongtai Machine & Tool CO. (東台精機) have joined OLCA.

OLCA Chairman CT Liu (劉軍廷), who is also the Vice President and General Director of the Electronics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratories at the ITRI, said that while fluorescent lamps are the leader in terms of high luminosity and cost-efficiency, technological development of fluorescents has reached its limit. Light-emitting diodes and OLED, on the other hand, still have room to grow.

Due to its advantages in achieving high luminance with direct-current low voltage and offering high light use efficiency, OLED can theoretically achieve higher luminance efficiency and longer life than fluorescent tubes., Liu said.

With an eye to making OLED ready for indoor lighting, Liu said, OLCA has organized five committees, which are lamps, lighting design, materials, fixtures and optical engines. More than 60 companies have shown their interest in collaborating with other OLCA members.
