June export orders could rise over 5%: Economic Ministry

TAIPEI--With global demand on the rise on the back of an economic recovery, Taiwan's export orders for June are expected to continue to rise, growing more than 5 percent from a year earlier, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Saturday.

The ongoing uptrend in the global export market could make June the fifth consecutive month in which Taiwan has registered year on-year growth in export orders, the MOEA said.

The ministry is scheduled to release its June export order data July 21.

In May, Taiwan's export orders rose 4.7 percent from a ear earlier to total US$38.02 billion, largely in reflection of solid demand for mobile devices worldwide.

The MOEA said that as strong demand for handheld devices continues and the global PC market improves due to replacements resulting from the end of Microsoft's support for the Window XP operating system, Taiwan's high-tech product exporters are expected to report growing order data in June.

In May, export orders placed on Taiwan's electronics and information devices rose 12.6 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, from a year earlier, according to the MOEA.

The ministry said that Taiwan's flat panel makers are expected to enjoy an increase in export orders in June as global demand for ultra-high definition TVs and PCs grows.

However, Taiwanese flat screen suppliers still face stiff competition from China and South Korea, the MOEA said. It added that display manufacturers in China have been accelerating their efforts to increase their production capacity, while South Korean counterparts have been cutting product prices.

The ministry said Taiwanese petrochemical and base metal makers should remain alert over a supply glut in the China market.
