HTC clarifies fate of marketing, engineering chiefs

TAIPEI -- HTC Corp. clarified a news report Tuesday that its Chief Marketing Officer Ben Ho and President of Engineering and Operations Fred Liu have decided to quit the Taiwanese smartphone maker, following the recent departure of another executive.

Bloomberg News reported earlier in the day that Ho, who joined HTC in January 2013, will leave the company by the end of this year and his job will be taken over by Chairwoman Cher Wang.

The report, citing two anonymous people familiar with the matter, also said Liu will retire after serving the company for 16 years.

The resignation of the two executives came on the heels of the departure of Paul Golden, a former executive of HTC's rival Samsung Electronics Co., who decided to leave HTC earlier this year when his short-term contract as a marketing consulting expired, the report said.

Asked about the report, HTC said Ho is on a "sabbatical leave" but declined to confirm whether he had resigned or not. The company said Liu will remain with the company but will transfer to a different position.

The handset manufacturer said it will continue to push forward, making the hard decisions needed to continue growing as a global presence.
