Mazda Taiwan bullish on local market

TAIPEI--Mazda Motor Taiwan, the local branch of the Japanese carmaker, expressed optimism on the local market Tuesday and said it aims to increase its local market share over the next four years.

Currently occupying some 3.5 percent of the Taiwan market, the company hopes to get a 5-percent market share by 2018, it said in a prepared statement.

"We'd like the new branch to both enhance the brand image and strengthen the strong ties with our customers here," the company said.

In order to increase its presence in the local market, Mazda Motor Corp. opened the Taiwan branch July 1.

Mazda Motor Taiwan will take over sales and post-sales from Ford Distribution Taiwan Ltd., a local sales agent for Mazda, the company said.

Despite the misleading name, Ford Distribution Taiwan has been the local agent for Mazda since 1997. The distributor was established by Ford Lio Ho Motor Co. (福特六和), a manufacturer and distributor for the American car brand.

Mazda Motor Taiwan plans to keep its partnership with Ford Lio Ho and allow it to assemble Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 models domestically in the future.
