MediaTek unveils octa-core SoC for 4G network mobile devices

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- MediaTek (聯發科), one of the world's leading fabless semiconductor companies yesterday unveiled the MT6595 and the MT6795, the firm's latest true octa-cored system on chip (SoC) solutions tailored for the next generation of 4G network-capable flagship mobile devices at a product launching event in Shenzhen.
While both SoCs feature 8 cores, the MT6795 is the first solution to to employ the 64-bit computing architecture and is comprised of 8 Coretex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2Ghz, while the MT6595 remains a 32-bit chip, comprised of 4 Coretex-A17 cores and 4 Cortex-A7 cores also clocked at 2.2 Ghz. Both chips utilizes ARM Holdings' big.LITTLE architecture that optimizes battery power consumption by coupling slower but less power hungry cores with more powerful but more power draining cores, that maintains peak usage performance at significantly lower power consumption averages.
The 64-bit MT6795 and 32-bit MT6595 supports features found among current flagship smart phones including 2K ultra high definition display with resolution of 2560 x 1600 resolution, 20 megapixel camera, FDD-LTE and TD-LTE networks, and H.265 multimedia encoding. The MT6795 also supports dual channel LPDDR3 933Mhz memory. Reports indicate that the MT6595 will support all five varieties of mobile networks comprised of TDD and FDD LTE, HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, and GSM.
Energy consumption and heat generation for the chips are governed by MediaTek's proprietary CorePilot technology.

Most notably, MT6795 represents MediaTek's efforts toward taking advantage of a 64-bit version of the Android operating system that is slated to be released towards the end of this year.
In multimedia and graphical processing, the MT6795 is powered an Imagination Technology PowerVR G6200 GPU, and supports content playback at 120 Hz refresh rate, and super slow motion of 1080p video playback at 1/16 speed.
MediaTek's ranks of 64-bit chips are bolstered by lower priced variants including the more mainstream MT6752, and the low-end MT6732.
The company indicated that the MT6595 is capable of reaching scores exceeding 47,000 points in AnTuTu benchmark testing, besting Qualcomm's current flagship quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip by 35,000 to 40,000 points.
Devices powered by the MT6795 are expected to go on sale as soon as third quarter, or before the end of this year, said MediaTek, adding that China-based smart phone makers may adopt the chip in their flagship models priced under 2,000 yuan.
The company confirmed that its product roadmap for 2015 will include support for LTE cat. 6 network standard that is capable of download speeds reaching 300Mbps.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that negotiations are ongoing between MediaTek and Dubai's Eurostar Group to release the Tornado IQ455 smart phone powered by the company's MT6592 chip. MediaTek is also rumored to to be collaborating with Google on the next generation of the U.S. Internet giant's Chromebook portable laptops.
