TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A matchmaking event between Taiwanese and Japanese companies generated over US$100 million in business Tuesday, said the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).
The event, part of efforts by Taiwan's government to boost exports, featured 358 one-on-one purchasing meetings between 233 local companies and 37 Japanese businesses, TAITRA said in a statement after the daylong event.
The Japanese companies showed great interest in buying machinery, auto parts and components, "green" products, hand tools and electronic components, the trade promotion body said.
Taiwan exported US$19.22 billion worth of products — or 6.29 percent of its total exports — to Japan in 2013, making the neighboring country Taiwan's fifth-largest export destination, according to official statistics.
During the first four months of the year, Taiwan exported US$6.23 billion-worth of products to Japan, up 1.1 percent from a year earlier, statistics showed.
