Standard Chartered program will enhance students' financial savvy

The Standard Chartered Bank has launched a program to promote financial learning among Taiwan's elementary school students.

Standard Chartered said a survey it has conducted has found that the Finance Quotient (FQ) of Taiwan's university students is not much higher than that of elementary students, the former averaging 32 percent, and the latter 29 percent.

It stressed that the younger generations in Taiwan are well aware of their serious lack of knowledge of the financial world in the face of the fast changing global economy.

The bank started a trial run in Taipei in 2013 by working with the city government and the Information Society Promotion Association (ISPA) to help social studies teachers at elementary schools develop classes to enhance students' financial learning.

The trial run in Taipei was a success, prompting the organizers to decide to expand the program to Taoyuan and Hsinchu this year, with more than 10,000 teachers and students to have their financial knowledge enhanced.

The program will also continue in Taipei this year.
