Taiwan's display product market forecast to see growth

TAIPEI--Taiwan, in line with a global trend, will see a growing market for display products such as smartphones, tablets and LCD TVs, market information advisory firm GfK said.

Taiwan will account for some 10 percent of the sales of those products in the "Developed Asia" region, which includes Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong said Jurgen Boyny, global director of Consumer Electronics, GfK Retail and Technology.

Sales of smartphones, tablet computers and LCD TVs in Taiwan this year will reach 7.7 million, 2.1 million and 1.2 million units, respectively, he predicted in a forum in Taipei on the sidelines of the annual COMPUTEX trade show.

Sales of LCD TVs in Taiwan will account for 0.5 percent of the global market, putting the country in 28th position, the analyst said, noting that it ranks 38th worldwide in terms of gross domestic product per capita.

Continued strong demand in China will drive the sales growth, Boyny said, projecting that the China market will absorb one in every three smartphones sold in the world this year.

He said global information technology spending is expected to pick up again after registering zero growth in 2013.

This year, spending in the digital world will increase by an annual 1 percent to 797 billion euros (US$1.08 trillion) and in 2015, will grow annually by 5 percent to 835 billion euros, Boyny projected, citing an improving global economy and stronger demand for upgraded personal computers and TVs.
