TAIPEI -- The vice president of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), has been honored in Los Angeles with Fellow membership of the Society for Information Display (SID), a leading global display industry group.
The award is in recognition of Janglin Chen's contributions to the development of flexible displays, substrate technology FlexUPD, and thermally re-writable i2R e-Paper, an electronic paper, ITRI said in a statement released Tuesday.
Thousands from around the world vied for the honor, only five of whom were selected, the statement said.
The membership grade of Fellow is one of unusual professional distinction conferred by the Board of Directors, acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee, upon a SID member of outstanding qualifications and experience as a scientist or engineer in the field of information display who has made widely recognized and significant contributions to the advancement of the display field, according to the official SID website.
Chen, who had been living in the United States for 28 years, returned to Taiwan in 2006 to work for ITRI, the institute said. He is currently leading a team to deploy flexible AMOLED technology for commercialization and provide a material and equipment verification platform for next-generation smart devices, it added.
Other Taiwanese that have been conferred with Fellow membership include National Chiaotung University's Chair Professor David Shieh, former AU Optronics Corp. Chief Intellectual Officer Luo Fang-Chen and former Hannstar Vice President Yang Kei-hsiung.
