ARM Holdings to establish CPU design center in Taiwan

TAIPEI--British chip designer ARM Holdings Plc announced yesterday the establishment of a new central processing unit (CPU) design center in the Hsinchu Science Park, the company's first in Asia and its fourth in the world.

The new center will focus on the design, verification and delivery of the ARM Cortex-M processor series, which targets the Internet of Things technology, wearable devices and embedded applications markets, ARM executives said at a pre-show press conference ahead of this year's Computex Taipei computer trade show.

The center is slated to open at the end of 2014 and will create highly skilled microprocessor design opportunities for the technical community in the region, according to ARM. The financial aspect of the investment was not disclosed.

Noel Hurley, deputy general manager of CPU at ARM, said at the press conference that the company intends to "find a talent pool" in Taiwan and plans to hire at least 100 engineers to work at the new design center.

In a prepared press release, ARM Chief Executive Officer Simon Segars said the close proximity to key semiconductor and ecosystem partners and high-caliber local engineering talent makes Taiwan an ideal location for ARM to expand its CPU design activities.

"Establishing a new, world-class CPU design team in Taiwan will allow us to work even more closely with key regional partners seeking to accelerate this market," Segars said.

Simon Chang, head of the Ministry of Science and Technology, said he feels happy to see ARM's recognition of Taiwan's achievements and its willingness to further invest in Taiwan.

Since ARM was founded in 1990, more than 50 billion ARM-based systems-on-a-chip units have been shipped globally by ARM's partners, including handset makers Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony Mobile.
