TAIPEI--The founder of the YongLin Healthcare Foundation (永齡基金會) and chairman of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (鴻海精密) recently signed an agreement with leading medical device company Varian Medical Systems Inc. to buy advanced medical equipment for radiation treatment in Taiwan.
The proton therapy system will be donated to the newly built YongLin Bio-medical Engineering Center at National Taiwan University (NTU), which will soon go into service, Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) said at a press conference.
“It is not simply a procurement or technology-transfer deal, but is rather taking advantage of Varian's leading position in the world,” he said.
“We should participate in the construction of the cancer hospital, the research and development of medical equipment and the process of medical treatment to gain valuable experience,” Gou noted.
Under the agreement, Varian and NTU professionals will also conduct joint research on radiotherapy and develop advanced photon and proton systems in a bid to promote radiation treatment in Taiwan and save costs for cancer patients, according to YongLin.
Dow Wilson, president and chief executive officer of Varian, said at the press conference that the agreement will create a mutually beneficial situation for cancer patients, Varian, YongLin, NTU and Taiwan's bio-medical industry.
The partnership is expected to bring about more advanced medical research in the future, such as radiation biology and healthcare informatics, Wilson said.
