Acer chair to try and fund cross-strait creative trade

TAIPEI -- Acer Inc. (宏碁) Chairman Stan Shih (施振榮) announced plans Wednesday to raise between US$200 million and US$500 million through investors in mainland China and Taiwan to develop the cross-strait creative industry.

Shih, who is also chairman of Taiwan's National Culture and Arts Foundation, said the fundraising is expected to be completed this year and will target mainly Chinese investors in an effort to tap into China's huge creative industry market.

The funds will be used on innovations that combine the strength of the cultural and creative industry and the technology sector, he said at a media briefing at a local forum on the cross-strait creative industry.

The money will also be spent on the development of applications for Chinese-language consumers, such as medical electronics for the elderly, Shih added.

The initiative will offer a bigger and more internationalized platform for young people in Taiwan and China to explore new business opportunities, the chairman said.
