Hon Hai to increase wages at three subsidiaries: Gou

TAIPEI -- Hon Hai Group announced Saturday that it will raise the salary of workers at three of its subsidiaries to the same levels of the parent company from May 1.

The three subsidiaries are Innolux Corp. (群創光電), Foxconn Technology Co. (富士康), and Zhen Ding Tech (臻鼎科技), Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou said in a news conference.

At Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., engineers and administrative staff with bachelor's degrees are offered starting monthly salaries ranging between NT$36,000 (US$1,193) and NT$47,000, according to Gou.

The starting salary of production operators — jobs that do not require a college degree — is at least NT$26,000 per month, he said, and all company employees receive year-end bonuses equal to at least two months' salary.

Gou's announcement was apparently a response to controversy over a comment he made recently on wage stagnation in Taiwan, where many college graduates are paid starting salaries of only NT$22,000 (US$729) per month.

Gou boasted Thursday that he would acquire those low-wage companies and then raise the salaries of their workers, sparking heated discussion on the Internet.

One netizen identifying himself as an employee of Innolux Corp. said he was earning exactly NT$22,000 per month and urged Gou to first increase the pay of his own workers before thinking about others.

The Hon Hai tycoon said Saturday, however, that Innolux investigated the claim and could not find such a worker.
