Taiwan mulling 'easier' mobile credit card processing

TAIPEI -- Taiwanese consumers will soon benefit from "easier" payment experiences at certain restaurants and services companies, a local credit card promotion group said Wednesday.

Vendors will be able to accept credit card payments by using a card reader attached to a tablet computer or smartphone, making credit card payments easier, said Margaret Yin, senior executive vice president of the National Credit Card Center of R.O.C.

With the mobility of handheld devices, consumers will be able to pay for goods at the point of sale rather than lining up at a checkout counter, Yin told CNA by telephone.

The mobile service will also mean better credit card security because consumers can keep an eye on their card throughout the payment process, she said.

Cardholders still need to sign to confirm their payment, but they will do it on a touch-enabled screen instead of on a piece of paper. They will then receive a payment receipt via a QR code or an e-mail, Yin explained.

"We will start with a pilot scheme and may expand the scale if the public widely accepts it," said Yin.

The project will go on six-month trial runs at Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant Taiwan, DA.AI Technology Co. and Fubon Insurance Co.

The center, in collaboration with Visa Taiwan, wants to provide an "easier" payment experience, in line with global trends, she said.

Asked if the service could boost consumers' willingness to pay by credit card, Yin was optimistic but could not offer an estimate of the technology's potential impact on credit card usage.
