Global smartphone shipments forecast to rise in second quarter

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Worldwide smartphone shipments will grow in the second quarter of the year with the arrival of the industry's traditional peak season, according to a local market information advisory firm.

According to the Central News Agency, TrendForce said in a research note Monday that smartphone shipments grew 5.2 percent during the April-June period from the previous quarter.

In addition to the high-season effect, China's rising Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) market is also creating growth momentum for smartphone shipments and upgraded smartphone specs, it said.

The quarterly shipment growth for Chinese-brand handsets is expected to exceed 10 percent, higher than the market average, rendForce predicted.

Due to soaring market demand, mobile DRAM supplies are expected o face shortages, while PC DRAM growth ill likely drop 5-10 percent on a quarterly basis, the report said.

Mobile DRAM officially replaced PC DRAM as the dominant DRAM product market during the second half of 2013, according to market advisory company DRAMeXchange.

Overall global smartphone shipments are expected to top 1 billion for the first time ever this year.

The U.S.-based research firm Strategy Analytics estimated earlier that about 1.2 billion smartphones will be sold around the world in 2014, up more than 20 percent from the previous year.

The Asia-Pacific region is forecast to take up more than the half of the global smartphone market with almost 650 million unit sales, followed by North America, Western Europe, and Central and Latin America.

The global smartphone market has grown ten-fold in just seven years.

With the market becoming saturated, the report expects much slower growth in the future.
