Quota for individual Chinese to be raised to 4,000

TAIPEI -- In anticipation of a possible influx of Chinese visitors during China's May Day holiday, Taiwan will raise the daily quota for individual Chinese travelers entering the country from 3,000 to 4,000 starting April 16, the National Immigration Agency said yesterday.

Individual tourists are defined as those who are not part of a tour group.

The agency said that since January, the number of Chinese applying for individual travel has averaged more than 3,000 per day, showing that more and more of them are keen on this way of experiencing Taiwan.

The agency noted that during the January-March period, Chinese people made 250,000 individual visits, while the number of tourists traveling with groups hit 520,000.

In March alone, the number of Chinese tourists traveling with tour groups hit 220,000, setting a single-month high since Taiwan opened to Chinese group tourists in 2008.
