TAIPEI -- Yahoo Taiwan Holdings launched a mobile news application Monday that combines its popular Web-based features such as a viewer rating system for each news story.
The Mandarin Yahoo News app, which currently only runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, integrates over 30 news outlets in Taiwan into a single platform, said David Lee, director of Yahoo's Taiwan and Hong Kong Mobile Product Development.
Its localized features also allow users to rate each story by choosing from eight sentiments — informative, warm, happy, odd, boring, worrying, depressing and angering, Lee said at a press conference in Taipei.
Ratings will be calculated and updated every five minutes. Readers can also read up to 20 most-rated news under each of the eight sentiments in addition to 14 traditional categories such as technology and sports, according to Lee.
It is Yahoo's biggest effort and its first major news app, Melora Zaner, senior director of Yahoo APAC Design, told CNA on the sidelines of the press conference.
The Taiwan-exclusive app can be compared to the Yahoo News Digest — a previous news app for worldwide users — like a full meal to a snack, Melora said, adding that her team has put a lot of effort into providing the best user experience.
