DHL to invest 150 million euros to boost Leipzig hub capacity

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- DHL Express recently announced that it would double the operational size of its main European hub in a 150 million-euro investment to expand its facility at Leipzig in eastern Germany, allowing for 50-percent hub capacity growth.

DHL Express said it is planning new sorting systems to increase the hub's capacity for processing shipments to more than 150,000 per hour.

Additional warehousing, sorting facilities and office space will be built in a 44,000-square-meter development.

Construction work began in late 2013, with expectations that the expansion will be operational from the fourth quarter of 2014.

John Pearson, DHL Express chief executive officer (CEO), said the Leipzig hub has been "critical" to his company's ability to help customers in Germany and other European countries expand business internationally.

DHL Express will increase sorting capacity to 150,000 items per hour with the new sorting system.

Leipzig is one of three global hubs forming the pillar of the DHL worldwide network, with the company operating out of the site for the past five years. The latest investment brings DHL's total investment in the 2 million square meter site to more than 510 million euros. DHL Express is expecting to create 400 jobs by expanding the facility, on top of the 3,500 already employed in Leipzig.
