Sports shoe sales jump 24 percent last year: research

TAIPEI--Sales of sports shoes in Taiwan jumped 24 percent last year, boosted by a rise in the number of people who exercise regularly and by the number of sporting events being held, according to a report released Wednesday by German market researcher GfK Group.

Sports shoe manufacturers saw their revenues increase 27 percent last year, with the market for sports shoes expanding to NT$19 billion (US$624.4 million) in the same year, the report shows.

Kung Wen-ying, a senior Gfk analyst, attributed the jump in sales to the rise in the number of people taking regular exercise.

The number of people who exercise regularly rose to 31.3 percent last year, up from 30.4 percent in 2012, according to a survey by the Ministry of Education's Sports Administration.

Among them, 88 percent said they have kept up their routines for more than half a year.

Another explanation for the rise in sports shoe sales is the number of sports events being held, while manufacturers continue to roll out shoes in eye-catching colors and with trendy designs, Kung said.

Of all sports shoes, running shoes experienced the highest increase in sales, at 41 percent, thanks to an increase in the number of female customers, followed by basketball shoes, the survey shows.
