Hon Hai ups salaries, expands recruitment at home and abroad

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In response to rising consumer prices, Hon Hai Group (鴻海集團) plans to give a raise to its employees in April, the company's vice chairman Dai Cheng-wu (戴正吳) said yesterday.

Hon Hai will grant a raise of NT$3,000 per month to the company's employees who are making an annual income of less than NT$1.2 million.

Hon Hai initially planned to provide the raise in May, but due to rising consumer prices, the company decided to provide the raise ahead of schedule. Starting in April, none of Hon Hai employees' monthly salaries will be below NT$26,000, Dai said.

Hon Hai grants raise every year, and the company reviews its pay structure every six months, Dai said, adding that the company granted a raise in November last year, at an average raise of 6 percent.

Recruitment Effort in Mainland China

Hon Hai is making a major recruitment effort on both sides of the strait. The company is set to hire 15,000 new employees in Taiwan, and 25,000 people in its fourth-generation industrial park located in mainland China's Guizhou province.

The recruitment effort in China will be carried out in two stages, with the first stage lasting until the end of March and recruiting 5,000 people. The second stage will take place between April and October, recruiting 20,000 people. The company is mostly looking for operators specializing in product assembly, surface-mount technology production, product testing and maintenance, machine operation, quality control and warehouse management.

Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) paid a visit to Guizhou province in October last year to attend a ceremony celebrating the kickoff of an industrial park that integrates several aspects including food services, everyday living, sports and production.

Gou inked an agreement with the government of Guizhou province last week, and announced that Hon Hai will invest a total of NT$1.1 billion locally, establishing a green data center and an R&D center.

Recruitment Effort in Taiwan

Hon Hai kicked off its local recruitment effort last weekend with the company's largest recruiting effort in Taiwan. The company said it was mostly looking for mid- and high-level engineers specializing in 4G technology, cloud technology, e-commerce, automation and software and hardware design.

According to Dai, the company has received 5,359 resumes, with 51 percent of the applicants coming from National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University and National Cheng Kung University. Sixty-two percent of the applicants have a master's degree and 38 percent have some past work experience.

Hon Hai's chairman did not hide his intention to compete for talent, as Google announced recently that it is also recruiting new talent in Taiwan. If an applicant can show a job offer letter from Google, Hon Hai will pay double or triple the salary offered by Google, Gou said.
