Taiwan Mobile to promote short films for social welfare

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Mobile Co., the country's second-largest mobile provider, launched a promotional event on YouTube Wednesday for three movie shorts sponsored by the carrier in a bid to gain more social awareness about the disadvantaged.

The operator allocated a budget of NT$350,000 (US$11,550) last year for each of the films, which are based on true stories from the First Children's Development Centre, the Formosa Cancer Foundation and the Mennonite Social Welfare Foundation, said Josephine Juan, secretary-general of Taiwan Mobile Foundation.

Taiwan Mobile will donate NT$1 on every YouTube click of the movies, to a maximum of NT$100,000 for each film, she said.

"Taiwan's non-profit organizations generally lack the ability to produce digital applications," Juan told a press conference. "If we can help them make the first step toward digital applications, their abilities to raise funds should be greatly improved."

A short based on a story of an autistic child called "Hsiao Hua" has attracted more than 200,000 views in the first month since it was posted to YouTube Feb. 5, the highest initial views among all social welfare shorts sponsored by Taiwan Mobile over the past two years.

The record-high YouTube views are a result of a well-written script, excellent director and actors, and strong support from the First Children's Development Centre, Juan explained.
