Asustek becomes No. 3 tablet vendor last year

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. was the world's third largest vendor of tablet computers in 2013, moving up one spot from the 2012 rankings, according to a report published Monday by U.S. research firm Gartner Inc.

The Taipei-based company shipped 11 million tablets last year to take 5.6 percent of the global market, according to the report. Both figures are improvements from the 6.3 million units and 5.4 percent share recorded in 2012.

Apple Inc.'s strong fourth quarter helped it maintain the top position in the market in 2013, during which it shipped 70.4 million iPads for a 36 percent market share, Gartner said, while second place went to Samsung Electronics Co. with 37.4 million units shipped for a 19.1 percent share.

Rounding out the top-five were Amazon.com Inc. in fourth place and Lenovo Group Ltd. in fifth, with market shares of 4.8 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively, the statistics showed.

Gartner said that worldwide sales of tablets to end users reached 195.4 million units in 2013, a 68 percent annual increase, fueled by growth in the low-end smaller screen tablet market and demand from first-time buyers.
