Shipments of large-size panels continue decline

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Global shipments of large-sized panels continued to slump through January, the traditional slow season for the industry, according to figures from a flat screen research firm.
WitsView said that 64.07 million large-sized panels shipped in January, down 13 percent from the 73.71 million units in December — also a decline of 3.6 percent from November's 76.47 million units.
Jeffy Chen, a research manager at WitsView, attributed the contraction to inventory adjustments caused by the low season effect and Lunar New Year holiday, which fell at the end of January this year.
Panels for tablet computers showed the sharpest monthly decline at 20 percent to 19.34 million units in January, as major brands were adjusting inventory and demand from white-box brands weakened, Chen said, citing a report by his firm.
Demand in February is expected to continue the downward trend, Chen said, predicting that overall shipments of large-sized panels will tumble a further 10 percent.
