Taiwan now a top market for Star Cruises in Asia

TAIPEI--Taiwan has emerged as the largest market in Asia for Star Cruises, thanks largely to a rapid growth in passenger numbers in recent years.

Without giving specific numbers, Star Cruises said it recorded best sales in Taiwan among all Asian markets last year.

The leading cruise line in the Asia-Pacific region entered the Taiwan market in 1997.

In 2013, sea ports around Taiwan served 992,000 passengers, a rise of 41.8 percent from the previous year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

The high growth was partly attributed a 45.4 percent increase in cruise travelers, which totaled 390,000 last year.

Catering to the growing demand for cruise travel in the region, Star Cruises have recently ordered two mega cruise ships of 160,000 and 150,000 tons, respectively, each with a maximum passenger capacity of over 4,500.
