Acer PC shipments to Western Europe end 5-quarter decline

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Acer Inc. recorded year-on-year growth in PC shipments to the Western European market in the fourth quarter of 2013, ending a five-quarter decline.

The loss-making computer vendor shipped 1.79 million units to the region in the three months ending last December, an increase of 2.4 percent from 1.75 million units in the same period of 2012, Gartner Inc. said in its latest quarterly report.

With its 12.2-percent share of the Western European market, Acer maintained third place behind U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard Co. with 22.1 percent and China's Lenovo Group Ltd. with 13.3 percent, the report said.

Another Taiwanese company, Asustek Computer Inc., returned to the list of top-five vendors, shipping 1.45 million PCs to Western Europe to take a market share of 9.9 percent, ranking fourth ahead of Apple Inc.'s 8.9-percent share.

Gartner estimated that PC shipments in Western Europe totaled 14.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013, an annual decline of 4.4 percent.

Mobile and desktop PC shipments to that market dropped 6.5 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively. Shipments in the region's professional PC market declined 1.7 percent, while its consumer PC market fell 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to the researcher.
